Khopra Danda Trek ( Known as Khopra Ridge Trek)

The Khopra Danda Trek is one of the best alternative trekking routes in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This scenic journey takes you through lush green hills, traditional villages, and into the heart of the Annapurna Himalayas, leading to one of the most stunning viewpoints in the region.

Unlike more commercial trails, the Khopra Danda Trek offers a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience through the remote highlands, rich forests, and untouched mountain landscapes.

Where Is Khopra Danda?

The Khopra Danda trek is situated northeast of Pokhara, near the border between the Myagdi and Kaski districts. It lies close to the popular Ghorepani–Poon Hill route but diverges into more remote, unspoiled terrain. This trek takes you deep into the wilderness—through dense forests, along scenic ridgelines, and away from busy tourist routes.

Breathtaking Mountain Views Offer Khopra Danda Trek

The Khopra Ridge Trek offers jaw-dropping panoramic views of many Himalayan giants: Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna II (7,937m),  Annapurna III (7,555m), Gangapurna (7,455m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Hiunchuli (6,441m), Nilgiri Himal (7,061m), Gurja Himal (7,193m), Tukuche Peak,  (6,920m), Dhampus Peak (6,012m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) (6,999m), These majestic views make the Khopra Danda trek one of the best scenic ridge treks in Nepal.

A Unique and Untouched Trekking Experience

While Nepal offers many popular trekking routes, the Khopra Danda trail stands out for its natural beauty and tranquility. It’s one of the least-trekked and relatively newly opened trails in the Annapurna region, making it ideal for adventurers seeking a quiet escape.

A major highlight of this trek is the opportunity to visit Khayer Lake, a sacred alpine lake situated at a high altitude. Once a year, pilgrims visit the lake during a religious festival to bathe in its holy waters.

The Khopra Danda trek is more than just a hike—it's a chance to experience Nepal’s natural and cultural beauty while supporting responsible tourism.

In the morning, enjoy breakfast with a breathtaking mountain vista from Khopra Ridge before starting the descent toward Swanta Village. Trek carefully as the trail is steep downhill. As you walk, the massive spire of Dhaulagiri looms majestically on the horizon. Take in the typical Nepalese mountain landscape, filled with terraced fields and ridge-top villages. Upon reaching Swanta, head to a teahouse and take a well-deserved rest.

This village, filled with traditional houses, lies on a gentle hillside surrounded by paddy and potato fields. If you’re not feeling tired, you can explore this picturesque village and enjoy the grand views of the neighboring hills. Overnight stay will be in Swanta Village.

Day07

Approximately 5 hour Trek to Ghorepani

After breakfast, we will leave the charming village of Swanta and head toward Ghorepani. Our journey begins with a descent through the village, passing by paddy fields and lush jungle. As we approach the river, you’ll come across a traditional water mill, which you can take a moment to visit.

Cross the river on a swaying suspension bridge, and from there, begin the uphill trek to the village of Chittre. At Chittre, we’ll join the classic Annapurna Circuit trekking trail. From here, continue ascending through beautiful forested paths to reach Ghorepani, which means "Horse Water" in Nepali.

Day08

Hike to Poon, Trek to Hile, Drive to Pokhara

Today promises to be another beautiful day. Start with an early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m), where you’ll witness one of the most magical sunrises in the Himalayas. From the summit, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Himalayan giants such as Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna Massif, Himchuli, Gangapurna, and many other snow-capped peaks.

As the golden sun rises over the mountains, it bathes the landscape in brilliant shades of pink, red, and gold—a truly unforgettable sight that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

After soaking in the views, hike back down to the lodge for breakfast. Then, pack your bags and begin the descent toward Hile. The trail is steep but offers spectacular scenery along the way. Upon reaching Hile, board a vehicle for a scenic 3-hour drive to Pokhara. Once in Pokhara, transfer to a hotel near the peaceful Phewa Lake. You’ll have the rest of the day to relax or enjoy a stroll around the charming lakeside area of this beautiful city.

Day09

Flight to Kathmandu, Transfer to Hotel

In the morning, you’ll have some free time to explore the sights of Pokhara at your own pace. You may enjoy a peaceful boat ride on Phewa Lake or visit some of the city’s major attractions, such as Devi's Falls, Gupteshwar Cave, and the Seti River Gorge.

In the late afternoon, take a scenic 25-minute flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Essential Information

Best Season for the Khopra Danda Trek

The best time to trek to Khopra Danda is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November) seasons. During these periods, the weather remains dry and clear, providing ideal conditions for trekking and offering breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Himalayan peaks. Days are pleasantly warm, while nights can be chilly. However, these are also the peak trekking seasons, so trails may be busier with other trekkers.

In spring, the trail passes through dense forests of blooming rhododendrons in vibrant shades of pink, white, and red. Walking through hills blanketed in wildflowers with the snow-capped Himalayas in the background feels almost magical.

Autumn is one of the most popular trekking seasons. After the monsoon rains, the skies are crystal clear and the air is fresh. If you time your trek for late September or October, you can experience Nepal's two biggest festivals: Dashain and Tihar. These vibrant Hindu celebrations last several days and bring joyful music, dancing, and delicious food to the villages along the trail.

Equipment Packing Checklist for the Khopra Danda Trek

The Khopra Danda trek is not a technically difficult trail, and you won’t need complex climbing equipment. However, basic gear is essential for comfort and safety. Here’s a checklist of recommended items:

  • Trekking boots or trail shoes are suitable for rugged terrain
  • Lightweight windproof/waterproof jacket
  • Rucksack or daypack (around 30 liters) with a rain cover
  • Down jacket (for cold mornings and nights)
  • Sleeping bag (suitable for sub-zero temperatures)
  • Trekking pants and waterproof overtrousers
  • Long-sleeve shirts (lightweight and moisture-wicking)
  • Water bottles, water purification tablets, or a filter
  • Warm socks and undergarments
  • Rubber sandals or flip-flops (for use in the lodge)
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended for descents)
  • Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  • Power bank and charging cables
  • Sunblock, sunglasses, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer
  • Towel and personal toiletries

Travel Tip: Most of the above equipment can be rented or purchased in Kathmandu, especially in the Thamel area, where you’ll find both international brands and affordable local options.

You can also store extra luggage safely at your Kathmandu hotel free of charge. Just make sure to lock your bags before leaving them in the hotel’s storage room.

Internet Connectivity on the Trek

Internet access is available along the Khopra Danda trail, though it can be unreliable or slow in remote areas. Most teahouses offer Wi-Fi for an additional charge. However, free Wi-Fi is available at the Khopra Danda Lodge at the ridge.

For better connectivity, consider purchasing a Nepal SIM card (either Ncell or NTC) in Kathmandu, along with a mobile data plan. Mobile data often works better than Wi-Fi in many parts of the trail, though coverage can still be patchy in higher altitudes.

How We Ensure Your Safety on the Trek

Your safety is our top priority. We follow strict safety protocols, and all our treks are led by experienced guides who are trained in wilderness first aid and emergency response.

Here’s how we make your trek safe:

  • The itinerary includes built-in rest days to help with proper acclimatization and prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
  • Our guides carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter to monitor your oxygen levels at high altitudes.
  • All guides have 10+ years of trekking experience and are well-trained to manage emergencies.
  • If a trekker shows symptoms of AMS, an assistant guide will escort them to a lower elevation and follow appropriate medical protocols.
  • After a rest, if the trekker feels better, they may rejoin the group. If the condition worsens, emergency evacuation (by ground or air) to Pokhara or Kathmandu will be arranged for professional medical care.

We are committed to ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and memorable trekking experience for every traveler.
